Google has rolled out an update to Assistant on iOS which brings support for Siri Shortcuts. The company is trying hard to make Assistant a best replacement for Siri which currently is deeply ingrained within Apple’s platform. However, Google doesn't want to miss any chance. Once updated, you can also set up Siri shortcuts for phrases you frequently use with Assistant. Once the setup is done, whenever you say that to Siri, the Assistant app will open and immediately start listening for your command. You can access Assistant even when your phone is locked just by saying “Hey Siri” and then “OK Google." You can use it with custom voice command for a single smart home action or trigger your Google Assistant smart home routines inside of Siri. Saying something like “Goodnight Google” to Siri could open Assistant and run a routine like turning off all your lights and locking the door. For the new Assistant shortcut to work, just update the Assistant app for iOS to the latest version from App Store directly.

FCC proposes new plans to combat spam phone calls and text messages

The US Government to combat unwelcomed phone calls and spam text messages plaguing millions of consumers has proposed few proposals. However, one of its proposals raises for concern as it could enable telecom giants to censor legitimate communications. The FCC's first measure is to create a national database containing information about phone numbers that have recently been disconnected and reassigned to someone else. The effort aims to help businesses, such as banks and pharmacies, avoid dialing the wrong customers repeatedly. The second being the more controversial measure, this would give text messaging the same legal status as high-speed Internet, in effect offering wireless carriers such as AT&T and Verizon added leeway to block and filter text messages they recognize as spam. Combined, the two proposals could cut down on unwanted robocalls and texts by empowering telecom companies to fight spam and by placing renewed expectations on businesses to look before they dial. Earlier this month, FCC also warned AT&T, Verizon, and other telecom giants that the agency would “take action” in 2019 if the industry fails to adopt additional robo-call protections of its own. Google Duplex finally starts rolling out to Pixel phones

After being introduced at the I/O 2018, Google's Duplex is finally making its way to Pixel phones. Using Google Duplex, Assistant can now book appointments, make reservations and more. These actions usually require user physical action to pick up the phone and call the business to get things done, but Google Assistant will now take the job of going through all this behind the screen for you. All you have to do is just provide the date and time, and your Assistant will call the business to coordinate for you. However, it is only available in select cities which refers to the previously announced pilot metros of New York, Atlanta, Phoenix, and San Francisco. If you’re not in the “trusted tester” group, you’ll likely get an error from Assistant saying “Sorry, I can’t call to make reservations for you yet, but here’s their phone number: [10 digits].” To be clear, it’s not quite the Duplex experience Google demoed at its I/O 2018 developers conference in May, meaning Google Assistant isn’t booking haircut appointments just yet, and it can only place calls in English. But importantly, it’s no longer limited to businesses with which Google has explicitly partnered. Moving along, as you call businesses to book an appointment, Google Assistant asks for ...

Apple said to be planning iPhone XR price slash in Japan owing to poor reception, restart iPhone X production

Apple is said to be planning to discount the price of the iPhone XR model in Japan by offering subsidies to Japanese carriers, according to a new report. The price discount of the iPhone XR which costs $749 could come as early as next week. This is very rare for Apple to slash the price of a model within a month off the release.  This report comes in the wake of the earlier report which said that Apple canceled the additional production of the iPhone XR, XS, XS Max models due to lower-than-expected demand. Part of the problem for Apple is that the iPhone 8 is apparently still hugely popular in Japan because of its affordability. Given that it's cheaper than the XR and was still available when Apple launched the XS and XS Max, makes up for additional damage. Furthermore, sources also suggest that Apple suppliers have also resumed making the iPhone X which Apple no longer sells at its own stores. The strategy also allows Apple to benefit from lower-cost components and depreciated production line machinery. In contrast, the supply chain sources claim that the resumption of iPhone X production is partly due to Apple's need to use OLED panels ordered from Samsung ...

LG trademarks Flex, Foldi, and Duplex foldable smartphone names

Back in October, LG too joined the foldable smartphone race when CEO Hwang Jeong-hwan confirmed the same. There were also rumors that LG would showcase the phone at CES 2019. However, there is still much unknown about this LG foldable smartphone, including the name. A recent trademark application gives us new insights into the model names that LG has in its mind. LG Electronics applied for three brand name registrations at the EUIPO (European Union Intellectual Property Office) on 21st November 2018. According to trademark, the company looks to be considering Flex, Foldi, and Duplex. All three trademark applications are categorized as Class 9, which includes 'smartphones'. It is also unknown whether LG is working on multiple devices with foldable display and it is possible that the company will not use all three names (directly) at all. In the past year, we have come across various patents from LG for foldable smartphones, with different designs, so we're not sure which would make it to the final version. The company also filed a patent for a foldable LG smartphone with a double display, possibly the term 'Duplex' is meant for this. Duplex stands for double. LG Flex and LG Foldi are very close in terms of names. Foldi seems to refer to 'folding.' It is not the first ...

YouTube testing ‘Ad-pods’ two back-to-back ads so you can watch videos without interruption

YouTube has announced that it is planning on introducing two back-to-back skippable ads which it is calling “Ad-pods.” This will let you watch a longer video without interruptions. Currently, YouTube shows an ad at the start and while you're in the middle of watching a video.  Instead of two separate ads, YouTube will show two back-to-back ads before the video starts, to provide a distraction-free video watching experience. YouTube’s paid ad-free service, YouTube Premium, is only available in select countries. YouTube says that in its recent experience research in addition to factors such as the length of ads, viewers are quite sensitive to the frequency of ad breaks, especially during longer viewing sessions. To respond to this, the company will soon begin testing ad pods–two ads stacked back to back, where viewers have the option to skip directly to the content if it’s not the right ad for them. This new experience will launch on the desktop this year and will be followed by mobile and TV screens. Source | Via
