The Nokia Lumia 525, a newly launched device that we unboxed recently, has been known to be a slightly upgraded variant of the Lumia 520. It carries almost exactly the same spec sheet and hardware except for the RAM, which has been upped to 1 GB for obvious reasons. With an incredibly small change in hardware, one would expect everything else to remain the same. But that is not the case with the 525, because it comes with Lumia Black firmware update out of the box, which brings some algorithm-level changes to the already robust camera interface, the Nokia Camera. So, does this change the 520/5's camera performance in any way? Lets find out from some of our camera samples. Armed with a 5 Megapixel sensor capable of taking 720p videos, we set out to test the camera in various conditions, and here are all the samples in full resolution below(click to open) Daylight [gallery ids="94141,94142,94143,94144,94145,94146" link="file"] Macro [gallery ids="94150,94151,94152,94153,94154,94155" link="file"] Lowlight [gallery ids="94156,94157,94158,94159,94160,94161" link="file"] Video Sample httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAoRLd8bKdU Thoughts on the camera performance - Very similar to the Lumia 520 camera performance. The transition of Nokia's Device and Services division over to Microsoft is about to be completed and the Finnish company has revealed its financial results for Q4 2013. While there has been an operating profit of Eur 408 million, this was mainly because of its NSN equipment business. Interestingly, the company declined to share numbers for sales of Windows Phone running devices however it did mention that there has been a decline over the previous quarter. Nokia has blamed intense competition at the lower end of the spectrum for the drop in sales of both smart devices and mobile phones. Increasingly, it looks like the decision to hand over device operations to Microsoft was a good one from a financial perspective. “The sequential decline in discontinued operations net sales in the fourth quarter 2013 was primarily due to lower Smart Devices net sales. Our Smart Devices net sales were affected by competitive industry dynamics including the strong momentum of competing smartphone platforms. On a sequential basis, Mobile Phones net sales were approximately flat,” said Nokia . IFRS adjusted profit breakdown: Advanced Technologies- Eur 65 million HERE maps- Eur 18 million NSN- Eur 243 million After a few quarters of gradually increasing sales, the reversed trend in Q4 ...

One of the best things about Android is the ability to replace whatever you don't like - keyboards and launchers for example. iOS has always been, is and will be a closed environment without allowing users to replace their on-screen keyboards among many other things. SwiftKey, one of the very popular Keyboard applications on the Android platform, has been repeatedly asked by its fan-base to develop something for the iOS despite the restriction being on Apple's side. Finally it looks like SwiftKey has something for iOS platform. @evleaks has posted an image of SwiftKey Note application for iOS on iPhone giving a clue that SwiftKey may announce a full-blown faster note taking application for the iOS platform. Though there isn't much you can tell from the phone, you can guess that the iOS keyboard has not been touched as Apple does not allow it. What SwiftKey has done is that it has integrated its famous predictions to a line above the keyboard. This will hopefully allow for a faster typing experience on the iOS platform(the current experience is good indeed). But wait, there seems to be a catch. Since this is a full blown app, all the SwiftKey goodies will be ...

Nokia Lumia 525 Review When the Nokia Lumia 520 was launched at the Mobile World Congress event last year, not many knew that the company just introduced its first best seller in the Lumia series. It went on to become the most popular Windows Phone ever made, for the fantastic value it offered for the money. But there was one longstanding issue that Nokia had to fix, the small amount of RAM that denied a lot of people new games and apps that were trickling down to Windows Phone. So, in the series of upgrades that Nokia delivered to existing hardware with small changes, aka adding a 5 to the model number and re-releasing it, we now have the Lumia 525 that fixes the one issue that most wanted fixed. Hence the Lumia 525 comes with 1 GB of RAM and a minor look and feel refresh but overall retains everything else about the Lumia 520 because may be Nokia thought “why fix something that isn’t broke?”. So, how does the Lumia 525 match up to the newly re-invigorated competition, and what does the 1 GB of RAM bring? Let’s find out in our in depth review. In a recent move by Qualcomm to gain advantage in the smartphone market, it acquired patents of Palm Inc and iPaq smartphone among the other patents from HP. The total number of patents involved in the acquisition include 1,400 granted patents and pending patent applications from the United States and about 1,000 granted patents and pending patent applications from other countries that include China, England, Germany, Japan and South Korea. However, there was no word on the price that Qualcomm gave for the patents. Qualcomm is currently the market leader in smartphone chipset technology. The chipset company from San Diego also earns by licensing its patents and with the new acquisition from HP that comprises Palm OS patents, it hopes to extend its income. Prior to being acquired by Qualcomm, Palm Inc was acquired by HP in 2010 along with its WebOS and PalmOS technologies. However, since both of them failed to catch up with Android, HP had to sell off WebOS to LG which is currently using WebOS for its range of smart TVs. According to Qualcomm's spokesperson the acquisition of new patents will not result in increased royalty rates for existing Qualcomm licensees.
