Instagram said to be testing a new feature where it is planning to group student users by the college community. This move of Instagram brings the photo-sharing platform a step closer to the flagship Facebook app. Instagram is prompting users to join a college community and "connect with other students. >Once you were opt-in, it lets users add university and graduating year, and then it grants access to class-based lists of other students who've opted into the community. You can direct message or watch a user's public Story directly from the community lists. Looking closely shows that Instagram is mimicking a lot of Snapchat to attract young users including Stories. Instagram verifies a student using information people have publicly shared about their university, the accounts they follow and other connections they have. Since the feature is currently in testing, it seems to be allowing anyone to join as a student despite not being one. Source

Facebook said that it's testing out a  new feature "things in common," that would allow non-friends to connect. This feature would be present in the comment section and shows the things that are in common like if you live in the same city as someone or went to the same college.  Facebook will highlight things you have in common with non-friends who have left comments. In the comment section, under the username, you might see a label that says "You both went to the University," or that you're both from Phoenix. Apart from that, Facebook might also highlight if you're both a part of the same public Facebook group, or if you work for the same company, but are not Facebook friends. The company said the idea is to spark connections between non-Facebook friends that users might otherwise pass over. The test comes as a move to combat harassment on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. So highlighting commonalities between people on Facebook might spur some disclosure. This new feature also helps the company scrutinize fake accounts and make sure to safeguard against abuse. It also says that the information that people have shared publicly will be shown in the "things in common" labels. Since it is in the testing ...

Apple is said to be in plans to adopt a new power-saving backplane technology for the upcoming iPhone and Apple Watch displays with an to contribute to longer battery life, according to research firm IHS Markit. The backplane technology is responsible for turning individual pixels on and off and it plays a significant role in determining a display's resolution, refresh rate, and power consumption. Currently, OLED displays in smartphones use LTPS TFT, or low-temperature polysilicon thin-film transistors, as the standard backplane technology. However, things might in the future and Apple switch to LTPO TFT, or low-temperature polycrystalline oxide. Kept in theory, LTPO can save 5-15% in power consumption versus LTPS, resulting in extended battery life on future iPhones. The report says that LTPO has an Oxide TFT structure that can reduce the power leakage of LTPS. Apple might also develop LTPO technology to gain more control over components of OLED displays. The company currently sources flexible OLED panels exclusively from Samsung, but LG might soon become their number two choice and Apple might require both the companies to look into LTPO. Similar fashion, it might ask display manufacturers to start deploying LTPO first on the Apple Watch and then gradually introduce it in the iPhone display ...
