Samsung has appointed Lee Sang-chul as the new mobile marketing head. The move comes from the South Korean giant a month before the launch of its flagship Galaxy S6. Lee Sang-chul was formerly head of the company's Russian operations. He has been tapped as head of strategic marketing for the mobile business. Kim Seok-pil, Sang-chul's predecessor, has stepped down from the role due to health reasons and was unrelated to performance. Lee, who also has worked as head of Samsung's Latin American operations, will look after the launch of the new Galaxy S device. Samsung Galaxy S5, launched last year has seen relatively poor sales hence, the upcoming device's success will be extremely critical. The company's mobile earnings declined 64 percent from a year earlier in October-December. A latest report from IDC stated that in Q4, 2014, Apple has reduced the gap between Samsung when it comes to global market share. Samsung has sent out invitations for a March 1 event in Barcelona ahead of the Mobile World Congress trade show where its next Galaxy S smartphone is widely expected to unveiled. source

Vodafone applies for Indian banking permit

Vodafone India has announced it has applied to the country's central bank for a permit to operate a payments bank as the world's largest network looks to bring basic banking service to its millions of Indian customers. In the statement sent to Reuters, the firm said it was exploring options for a partnership for the mobile banking deal. Ahead of yesterday's deadline, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) received 41 application for payments banks who are allowed to take deposits but not lend money to consumers. The RBI also received 72 applications for a new category of banks calls small finance banks whom will presumably have the ability to both receive deposits and lend money to consumers. Should they be granted a permit, the deal would presumably allow Vodafone India to launch a mobile banking service that would negate the need for customers to visit a traditional bank. Similar systems are already in place in other developing countries and if granted a permit to accept deposits, Vodafone India could theoretically offer payments and traditional banking features to its existing customers whilst competing with the more traditional banks. The RBI confirmed the number of applications are subject to revision but did not indicate when ...

O2 UK have finally begun rolling out the Lumia Denim update for selected Lumia smartphones but for those receiving the update on the Nokia Lumia 930, it comes with a particular feature missing. One of the highlights of the update is the "Hey Cortana" voice activation but the Denim update for Lumia 930 users comes with this feature missing. With the update now rolling out, users have reported on O2's official support forum that the update comes without the feature that adds extra functionality with the ability to activate Cortana using just your voice. The carrier is not remaining silent on the missing feature as on its official forums, Chris from the Social Media Team posted: We’re trying to get the updates out sooner by streamlining the test and approval process. As a result, we were trusting Microsoft to test the O2 software updates for us and provide the results of the tests for us to approve, rather than us testing it, releasing back, and waiting for it to be pushed. In the case of the Lumia 930, the Cortana issue was missed by Microsoft, so we will be working together to improve the process for future updates. Microsoft have identified ...

Samsung has sent out invites to its March 1st event where we're expecting to see the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S Edge announced and in the run up to the event, we're now hearing that both handsets will come in these four colours. Sammobile is reporting that the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S Edge will be available in four different colours: dark blue, blue-green, gold and white (shown below). Previous Samsung flagship have come in a range of colours but there's usually a Gold and White version announced. There's also always the customary dark colour which is black on the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 but was dark blue on past Samsung flagships. The blue green is the colour that strikes us the most as it's not one used by Samsung in the past yet it could appeal to some users; we'd definitely like to see them offer Red or Rose as a colour variant as these could sell well. As always, these colours are not confirmed so take the information with a pinch of salt but would you buy the blue-green Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S Edge? Let us know in the comments below. Source

Micromax has beaten Samsung to be the top smartphone maker in India, according to a latest report from Canalys. The homegrown smartphone maker has achieved the heights in Q4, 2014, mainly due to shift of mobile phone users upgrading to smart phones. As per the report, Micromax is responsible for 22% share of total smartphone market in India while Samsung is just behind with 20%. "Micromax has been quicker than its competitors to improve the appeal of devices, for example, by including a wide variety of local languages on its Unite phones. Lava, another domestic vendor, has launched devices that cater to the preference for greater battery life – in this case a couple of days. But vital to success is selling these handsets at low price points to appeal to the bulging mid-level income market in India." said Canalys Analyst Rushabh Doshi said. India shipped a total of 21.6 million in Q4, 2014, up 90 percent year-over-year. 23 percent of these smartphone shipments were priced under US$100 (INR6,000).
