BT snubs O2, in talks to buy EE for £12.5 billion

The saga is finally over (well partially at least): as expected, BT have confirmed they are in exclusive talks to buy EE - Britain's largest mobile network - for the large sum of £12.5 billion. BT have confirmed their period of exclusivity would last for several weeks whilst negotiations took place and is likely to be a blow for O2's Spanish owners Telefonica who have been trying to offload their UK operation. A few weeks back we heard that BT was in talks to buy either O2 or EE and after that we also heard that the firm was favouring a bid for O2 as the EE acquisition would be subject to several regulatory hurdles. The make up of the post-acquisition BT would see EE's owners - Germany's Deutsche Telekom and France's Orange SA - take a 12% and 4% share in BT respectively. The 12 percent ownership share given to Deutsche Telekom would also mean that the Germany owner of the T-Mobile brand would be able to appoint one member of BT's board. BT said "The proposed acquisition would enable BT to accelerate its existing mobility strategy." EE holds approximately 34 percent of the UK mobile market according to revenue and the proposed deal ...

BT buying EE – is it good for consumers?

BT has confirmed that it is in exclusive talks to acquire EE, the UK's largest market mobile network group but is the buyout good for consumers? Will one of the UK's largest communications groups buying the largest mobile network result in lower mobile prices in the UK? The mobile market in the UK is converging towards a quad-play market where one provider offers broadband, television, landline and mobile services to customers in a single package. BT currently offers services in three of the four markets but in the mobile market, it has been missing from the market since selling its network to O2's parent company back in 2005. With BT set to re-enter the market with the acquisition of EE, is this likely to benefit customers? The potential benefits After acquiring some of the UK 4G spectrum in the auction last year, BT were expected to enter the market with its own network in a bid to offer mobile services under its own name. However, this would have resulted in significant infrastructure investment but by buying EE, the company have removed this requirement and instead have a large number of customers on their network from the get-go. With EE holding 34 percent market share (by ...

Looking at the range of Android Wear smartwatches available on the market, there's one key similarity between most of them; they feature square watch faces. Back when Google announced the Android Wear OS, they also part-announced the Motorola Moto 360 which features a round watch face and to challenge this, LG revealed the LG G Watch R back at IFA 2014 in September. Having spent two weeks with the LG G Watch R, what do we think? We're currently preparing our full review of the LG G Watch R so we won't be reviewing all aspects of the G Watch R in this post. Instead we'll be taking a look at how it compares to the Sony Smartwatch 3, whether Android Wear is suitable for a round watch face and how good the battery life is. The first thing you'll notice about the LG G Watch R is that it looks like an expensive watch. Unlike the Sony Smartwatch 3 which has a silicon band and a front that doesn't stand out, the G Watch R looks like a premium smartwatch and akin to those used by explorers. The design of the G Watch R is arguably one of its greatest features ...
