Nokia Lumia 925 has a “world’s first” 6 element smartphone lens and can go up to ISO 3200

Right when we were thinking what was new with the Nokia Lumia 925's camera, we just happened to see some tweets from Nokia's Imaging team. Having launched the device in London today, Nokia have confirmed that the Lumia 925 has a slightly updated camera, both in terms of hardware and software. In terms of hardware, the Lumia 925 is supposedly featuring a "world's first" 6 element lens, unlike the usual 5 element lenses on various smartphones. On the software front, apart from all the Smart Camera features, the camera can go up to ISO 3200 now, whereas ISO 800 was the previous limit on the Lumia 920. For comparison sakes, the Nokia 808 PureView can go up to ISO 1600. Explaining on the addition of a sixth physical element to the lens - @bogs028 @jalakarhu the sixth lens increases the sharpness — Kristina Björknäs (@bjorknas) May 14, 2013 So, yes, adding an element to the lens does increase the sharpness, and it is quite telling from the Nokia's own sample pictures. With the Lumia 920's achilles heel being soft mushy pictures in all lighting conditions, this just might be the perfect solution for that camera. BlackBerry's core strength - the BlackBerry messenger, in a surprising move, is going cross platform with iOS and Android versions of the very popular messaging platform to be made available in the coming months. It was announced right now, at its BlackBerry live conference in Orlando. The iOS as well as the Android app will be free on the respective stores. BBM will be compatible on all iOS devices running iOS 6 and Android devices running 4.0 ICS and above. While this may come as a shock to many, the app is losing its exclusivity after so many years. BlackBerry said that they will be bringing a full featured experience to all the platforms, so that parity is achieved. "it's time to bring BBM to a larger audience" said Thorsten Heins during the announcement.

Instagram for Windows Phone might go official soon, hinted by @InstagramWP twitter account

Only today did Nokia announce a new app in partnership with hipastamatic, which co-incidentally could share photos to Instagram. But as a surprise, we spotted this @InstagramWP account - which claims to be the official twitter account for THE official Instagram client for Windows Phone. While trying to check the credibility, we found that the official Nokia account was actually its first follower, adding more clarification to our doubts. So, yes, the official Instagram app for Windows Phone might be just around the corner then, yay? As you might know by now, Nokia had been really desperate to bring Instagram on board its chosen platform, Windows Phone. It even created its own app called "#2instawithlove" which had a few filters and was primarily aimed at showing that Windows Phone users really cared about Instagram on their platform. It might have also been a way to show metrics so that Instagram will actually consider the platform for engagement. Anyways, that happened a while ago and we still saw no response from the folks at Instagram. It was one of the top 50 apps on other platforms that Microsoft had to get and Nokia too were desperate to get it on their phones, ...

As you know by now, we are live from the Nokia Lumia 925 launch event in London, and we have had some hands on time with the device today. After we were done with the Nokia Lumia 925 photo gallery, we thought it might be fun to compare it with the other leading flagship devices like for example, the Samsung Galaxy S4. So, yes, we did compare the Nokia Lumia 925 with the Samsung Galaxy S4 and this is how it turned out - httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7tKw40HHZSk Moving from a strict polycarbonate diet, the Lumia 925 is thin and light and is now made of an aluminium frame and a polycarbonate backing. Compared to the Galaxy S4, the Nokia Lumia 925 feels far more premium with better materials overall. With a volumetric thickness of 8.5mm and weighing 139g, the device is almost equally thin as the Galaxy S4, which at 8mm of thickness and 133g of weight is slightly thinner and lighter. Both are impressive OLED displays, with the Galaxy S4 sporting a full HD Super AMOLED 1920x1080 display at 441 ppi while the Nokia Lumia 928 sports a 4.5 inch OLED at 1280x768 resolution and around 332 ppi. BlackBerry Q5 Photo Gallery

At BlackBerry Live in Orlando, BlackBerry has introduced its latest smartphone aimed at emerging markets. Dubbed the BlackBerry Q5, the handset has  a design that is reminiscent of the more premium Q10. Featuring a keyboard that is very similar to the higher end handset, it provides very good tactile feedback. This is not surprising given that BlackBerry is famous for its keyboard equipped devices.  Internally the phone is powered by a 1.2Ghz Snapdragon processor and has the same 2GB RAM as seen on the Q10. Storage is however half that of the Q10 or Z10 with just 8GB of space available on the Q5. The screen on the phone measures 3.1 inches diagonally and has a resolution of 720x720 pixels. Unlike the Q10, the Q5 has to make do with an IPS panel. The body of the phone is made of soft touch plastic but the front has a matte finish which makes it look quite good. The back of the phone unfortunately is a fingerprint magnet. Additionally, the 2000 mAh battery pack is sealed in and is not user replaceable. The phone will be available in a range of colors including Red, Pink, Black and White starting June. There is no update ...

Nokia Lumia 925 Hands On

I am here in London , United Kingdom for the Nokia Lumia event where the handset maker announced the latest addition to its Lumia line up of Windows Phones. I got some hands on time with Lumia 925 and here are my first impressions. The Lumia 925 might be the best Windows Phone device to be announced till now. It is also one of the most well made phones we have had a chance to play with in the recent times like the HTC One or iPhone 5. Nokia decided to use an aluminum frame for the 925 and the phone has a premium feel to it because of this. The back is not made of metal but uses plastic, polycarbonate material. The main highlight of the Lumia 925 is the Camera with supposedly best-in class low light camera performance. Watch the hands-on video below httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SAjAHjf6PWY The 4.5 inch display is a nice AMOLED screen but sadly only sports a resolution of 1280x768 pixels. But still pictures look pretty good on the display and considering the screen size is not too big , the resolution is not too bad.The phone is relatively light weight at 139 grams compared to the Lumia 920. ...

BlackBerry Q5 Hands On

BlackBerry introduced two new devices running on its latest operating system, BlackBerry OS 10, earlier this year. Dubbed the Z10 and Q10, the two devices focussed on the upper end of the spectrum with their high end specifications. However the mid range market is still very critical for the smartphone manufacturer that is still fighting a battle to recover from dwindling market shares. The Q5 is its ploy to regain its lost share of the budget to midrange smartphone segment. Video Demo : httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6i0HYBrvjnQ On the face of it, you'll spot that the handset looks fairly similar to the BlackBerry Q10. You can spot a similarly sized screen with a flat QWERTY keyboard below it. The keys provide decent feedback and while not as good as the one on the Q10, keypad lovers will quite enjoy using it. Moving to the display on the BlackBerry Q5, the Waterloo based manufacturer has decided to stick to the same size and resolution as on the Q10 which should make it much easier to ensure cross device app compatibility. Where the difference lies is in the kind of screen used with the Q5 settling for an IPS panel instead of the AMOLED screen used on the Q10. Over ...

We have been bringing you a lot of Nokia Lumia 925 coverage live from London, including a photo gallery, a Lumia 925 hands on and even a Samsung Galaxy S4 comparison video, so, following that tradition, here is our comparison of the Lumia 925 with its older brother, the Lumia 920. It is an interesting comparison because the Lumia 925 is a natural evolution of the Lumia 920, with it fixing many perceived flaws and shortcomings like thickness, weight and slightly mushy camera. Here is a quick comparison video to let you know some of the changes - httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sAwEdWizOI So, lets quickly go through what has changed then. Design and Build - The design of the Lumia 925 has taken a different path. The curved sides are still there but the flat top and bottoms are gone, paving the way for the same curved design overall. With regards to the build, the Lumia 925 improves upon the Lumia 920 in various ways. It now sports a thinner and lighter aluminium frame, coming in at just 8.5mm thickness(10.7mm for the 920, 9mm for the 720) and 133g of weight(185g for the 920). This is achieved by a number of factors, which we will be ...

Samsung has shipped over 6 million units of the Galaxy S4 in 14 days, according to a report from Korean daily chosun. The report says Samsung Galaxy S4 shipments crossed 4 million units in just 5 days. Samsung could Apple reported last September that they have sold over 5 million iPhone 5′s in just 3 days after launch. This is definitely a great achievement for Samsung which makes it the fastest selling phone in the Galaxy S series. Samsung announced earlier this year that they have sold over 100 million Galaxy S Series devices globally. It took 85 days for the Samsung Galaxy S to reach 3 million mark, 55 days to do the same for the S2, and 21 days for the S3. The Samsung Galaxy S3 that was released back in May 2012 took just 50 days to reach 10 million mark, the company believes that the Galaxy S4 will reach the 10 million mark as early as the end of this month. It would take less than 35 days for it to reach the mark, breaking their previous record. Source: chosun | Via: Unwiredview

Along with all the Lumia 925 stuff that happened yesterday, Nokia revealed some interesting software additions and updates in the announcement. While the highlight was on the Nokia Smart Camera lens, the picture editing app exclusive for Lumia devices, also called as the Nokia Creative Studio received a rather huge update yesterday. The new update comes with the version number 5.0.7.6, and is available for download here. The update is available for all Windows Phone 8 devices and introduces various new features. Naturally, we went hands on with it and found it to be quite nice actually, take a look - httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvREUPbBz6M As you can see in the above video as well as the first image, the Creative Studio app has been updated with three new features including focus + blur, colour pop and collage. Focus + blur doesn't need much explanation, like in the video, you can choose the sharp object and its outline to blur the surroundings. Works really well. The colour pop options lets you choose which colours you would want in a photo and display that alone. Collage, a much requested feature I believe has been finally added to the suite of photo editing tools. Along with all ...
