Google and Microsoft disclose new Variant 4 Meltdown, Spectre CPU flaw
Back in the start of 2018, Meltdown and Spectre CPU flaw affected most of the CPUs including Intel, ARM, and others. Months after the detection, Google's Project Zero’s (GPZ) and Microsoft have discovered another new form of Spectre-Meltdown CPU flaw; Speculative Store Bypass (variant 4).
The latest vulnerability is similar to Spectre and exploits speculative execution that modern CPUs use. However, Intel claims that they have not seen any reports of this method being used in real-world exploits so far. Browsers like Safari, Edge, and Chrome were all patched for Meltdown earlier this year, and according to Intel, these mitigations are also applicable to variant 4 and available for consumers to use today.
Similar to Spectre, the new Variant 4 will also affect performance upon fixing it with firmware updates. Intel says that it has already delivered the microcode update for Variant 4 in beta to OEMs and system software vendors, and the broad reach is expected to be available in the coming weeks. This update would set the Speculative Store Bypass protection to off-by-default, so users won't notice any performance impacts.
However, if enabled, a noticeable performance impact of approximately 2 to 8% is seen based on overall scores for benchmarks like SYSmark 2014 SE and SPEC integer rate on client and server test ...

Google, LG team up for next-gen VR OLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and 1443ppi
Google and LG have teamed up to produce an ultra high-resolution OLED panels that are intended for the next generation of VR headsets. Reports regarding the high-end OLED panel were first discussed back in March, and now it has been officially unveiled at the Display Week 2018 expo.
The OLED display sports a 4.3-inch 4,800x3,840 (18MP) size with a 120Hz refresh rate and 120x96 field of view (FoV). It also happens to be the world's highest-resolution OLED on glass display panel. Google's new panel is vastly superior when compared to those on the market today.
Google also clarified that two of these displays could be used in tandem; one for each eye and will be powered by a mobile chipset. However, the refresh rates might have to be reduced to 75Hz for specific applications. And, for transmitting a large amount of data, Google and LG are using a custom driver integrated circuit (IC) and foveated rendering which only renders what the user is currently seeing in high resolution.
However, there is still no information on when we can expect to see the new OLED displays will be available but should be worth a wait.

Samsung’s upcoming Gear smartwatch said to use Wear OS instead of Tizen

While these rumors might be a hit or a miss, now comes another confirmation from none other than Evan Blass who said to have spotted Samsung employees wearing Gear watches running not Tizen, but Wear OS.
Seen on the wrists of Samsung employees: Gear watches running not Tizen, but Wear OS.
— Evan Blass (@evleaks) May 23, 2018
Though the information sounds appealing and leads us to believe that Samsung might be changing its gear for the Gear smartwatch, it doesn't necessarily mean that the company would bring this to the masses ditching its own Tizen OS. But it is sure looks like the company is toying with the idea. Samsung's default go-to OS for wearables has always been the Tizen since for quite some time now, but the long lacking developer support has always been a burning issue for Samsung and its user base.
Either way, it still needs to be seen which way Samsung would take at the end of the day. It would definitely be interesting to see Samsung experimenting by launching Gear Smartwatch in ...
