Google to evolve Android Messages into ‘Chat’ using RCS, to pause Allo development

Despite many attempts to launch a unified messaging system, Google failed every time. Its  Google Talk, Google Voice, Google+ Huddles, Hangouts, Allo never witnessed the success that Google was hoping for. In its latest attempt to stand still against the mighty Apple's iMessages, Google instead of bringing a new app to the table is said to introduce a new system called "Chat" that will be built directly into the default Android Messages app. Google by the end of this year is said to introduce the new Chat feature and this time it is not following the previous trend. Google also mentioned that its two-year-old Allo development is halted indefinitely and the entire team behind the Allo will be moved work on Android Messages. Chat is the name Google gave to its Rich Communication Services (RCS) which is a new standard that’s meant to supplant SMS, and it will automatically be turned on inside Android Messages. The chat will include most essential features like read receipts, typing indicators, full-resolution images and video, and group texts. To be clear, Chat is carrier-based service, not a Google service. However, like SMS, Chat won’t be end-to-end encrypted and will follow the same legal intercept standards. The timing to enable the Chat will be dictated by ...

Back in March, it was reported that Netflix will be getting ‘Mobile Previews’ with vertical video in April and today the company has officially announced the roll out of the feature to iOS app and coming soon to Android. Mobile Previews is the best way to know if you’ll like a new series or movie that you are planning to watch. The Mobile previews present Netflix users with a fun, simple, and easy way to know more about all the new content on Netflix and find content that suits personal tastes. Each preview is about 30 seconds long and presented in a vertical format, and the previews are shown in a slideshow. Netflix last year had introduced video previews to the TV experience, which brought dynamic and engaging video to the TV interface. The company says that years of testing has made it clear that video previews will help Netflix users browse less and discover new content more quickly. With the launch of mobile previews, it is also bringing a video browse experience to the mobile phone in a mobile-optimized way. These previews are fast to load, and they are personalized to users specific tastes. Source

SmugMug acquires photo and video-hosting service Flickr

Photo hosting service SmugMug has announced that it has acquired Flickr for an undisclosed price. The company says that both the communities existed long before the brands were established. Since both, the companies share similar interests; connecting Photographers with others to share their passion, work, and inspiration this acquisition actually makes sense. Back in 2005 Yahoo bought Flickr for $35 million, but never really seemed to get some work with it. The company even tried various redesigns and new services to make Flickr work, but it never succeeded making a comeback against alternatives like Instagram. On the other hand, SmugMug, since it was established in 2004, has remained and built products that reflect the language of storytelling with photography. The company is aiming to keep Flickr as a standalone community and make it resourceful. Flickr said that over the course of the next month, it would be providing more details and developments about the acquisition, but for now, users can continue to log in with your current credentials and will have the same Flickr experience you are used to including access to your photos. As part of the acquisition, all Flickr accounts will move to SmugMug’s Terms of Service and Privacy Policy. Users will have until May 25, 2018, to either accept SmugMug’s Terms and Privacy Policy or ...

According to a report from Mac Otakara, Apple is said to introduce a new iPhone SE model in May. This new piece of information was obtained from case makers at the Global Sources Mobile Electronics trade show in Hong Kong this week. Furthermore, the next-gen SE is said to retain the same physical size as the current iPhone SE. The iPhone SE 2 (if that's what Apple is planning on naming it) will also pack the TouchID and will have the same 4-inches display with thick bezels on top and bottom to accommodate the front-camera, TouchID, and earpiece. Following the trend of iPhone 7, the new SE 2 will also likely skip the 3.5mm audio jack. If all, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus are likely to be discontinued in September, meaning Apple will no longer sell any iPhone model with a headphone jack. The Apple iPhone SE new model will also power the A10 Fusion chipset which is up to 40 percent faster than the A9 processor in the current iPhone SE. It is also reported that new iPhone SE may have a glass back with wireless charging capabilities, but it is inconclusive at this time. We have recently seen Eurasian regulatory database hinting at a new iPhone launch ...

Google expanding its policies to take on violent and hateful search autocomplete predictions

Google autocomplete predictions more often than not return funny and wild queries. Though they are fun at times, most of the times they tend to surface inappropriate predictions. However, Google is vowing to expand its policies to take on violent and hateful search autocomplete predictions.  The company will be rolling out updates in the coming weeks to reduce the possibility of it occurring. Autocomplete is especially useful for those using mobile devices to make it easy to complete a search on a small screen where typing can be hard. Google claims that on an average, it reduces typing by about 25 percent and is estimated save over 200 years of typing time per day. These predictions are common and are trending ones related to what someone types. However, Google removes predictions that are against its policies; Sexually explicit predictions, Hateful predictions, violent or dangerous predictions. In the coming weeks, it will be expanding the policies related to hate and violence and any predictions that “advocate, glorify or trivialize violence and atrocities, or which disparage victims” will be removed. Google is also providing an option for users to report using the “Report inappropriate predictions” which it launched last year, and appears below the search box on the desktop. As for mobile ...

Google Photos for Android gets advanced movie editor, reorganized bottom bar and more

Google is rolling out a new update to Photos app for Android which brings advanced movie editor, reorganized bottom bar and more. The advanced movie editor was earlier spotted in a teardown of v3.16 and now it is finally started rolling out in the v3.18 release. The new movie editor leaves behind the black background and takes on the white color scheme which Google seems to be following off lately. The new movie editor puts the primary video viewer toward the top of the screen and places each of your selected clips below it and only displays how much of each is included in the current edit. This U.I look is aimed at reducing the time it takes to make adjustments to the length of a clip. The new layout places all of the sliders front and center for speedy edits. Though the functionality remains the same, the look and feel are being updated like repositioning clips from one spot in the timeline to another by long-pressing on the thumbnail and then dragging it to a new location. Tapping on the overflow button next to a clip shows several features that weren't part of the old UI. Features like moving a clip up or down in the ...

Walmart said to acquire 51% stake in Flipkart next week

Back in February, it was reported that Walmart is likely to acquire more than 40% stake in Flipkart. However,  now report from Reuters says that Walmart could seal a deal to buy a more than 51% stake in Flipkart as early as next week. The U.S retail giant has been in the talks with Flipkart for quite some time now to acquire a controlling stake in Flipkart as it is aiming to take on rival Amazon in India. SoftBank Group, which owns about a fifth of Flipkart was unwilling to sell a part of its stake since Walmart was offering to buy existing shares at a valuation of $12 billion, which it thought was low. However, sources claim that stalemate between SoftBank and Walmart has ended, but it was not immediately clear though, whether SoftBank had agreed to sell some of its shares in Flipkart. Walmart’s purchase of new equity might value Flipkart at a minimum $18 billion.Walmart has made a proposal to acquire 51% or more of Flipkart for between $10 billion to $12 billion, but things could still push back to May should anything happen. On the other hand, some of Flipkart’s main investors including U.S. hedge fund Tiger Global Management, South African tech investor Naspers ...
