You might have seen us reporting on various marketshare reports each month coming from a company called IDC. Usually, the company provides a wider perspective of the global market for mobile phones as well as smartphones, but this time, they have focused on the second fastest growing mobile phone market in the world, India. We saw in June that the overall shipments of Smartphones in India was at just 6.1 million devices, but in a quarter, it has risen to 9.3 million shipments, according to IDC. And over half of the shipments were from local players like Micromax, Karbonn and the others, with the former taking the no. 2 and 3 positions of the Top 5 Smartphone vendors in the Indian market respectively. Micromax is now the no. 2 Smartphone player with 22% marketshare, just behind the market leader Samsung, at 26%. This amazing change is all thanks to the Phablet revolution in India, with >5 inch devices taking up more than 25% of the overall Smartphone sales. While Micromax has capitalized on the Phablet revolution, Karbonn has taken a similar, but even more aggressive approach, with high spec'd devices being offered at a comparatively lower price. Also, Samsung might have retained the ...

Qualcomm has released a new promo video titled "Better Cores, Not More Cores" that takes on the MediaTek's new Octa-Core chip. Even though the promo doesn't mention MediaTek, the "Our Competitor" wording in the promo clearly shows that it's MediaTek. Qualcomm says that More cores won't make your apps move faster, but faster cores will make your apps move faster. Qualcomm has more dual-core chips than the quad-core chips. These are faster and uses less power than the competitors, says the company. It managed compared top 20 apps in China, and 85% or 17 apps only used two CPU cores. The 15% percent that used more than two CPU cores barely used the third or the fourth core at all, says the company. Qualcomm's current-gen Snapdragon processors are 170% faster than the first-gen ones, whereas the Octa-Core chips doesn't have any kind of improvements than competitors current-gen quad-core chips, says the company. Even though MediaTek unveiled their True Octa Core chip solution last month that uses the full potential of all the eight cores for a seemingly better performance and even better battery life management, it did not say how better the chip's performance would be, compared to the competitors' quad-core chips. ...

Nokia Lumia 625 Unboxing

It might be really hard to believe, but the Nokia Lumia 625, that launched recently, is the company's largest phone till date, with respect to screen size. The UK Retail box of the 4.7 inch device just landed in our labs and naturally, we were bothered enough to unbox it and take a overview of the device on video, watch - httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTQVPQBunCY The box contents, as you saw in the video are - Pretty normal contents as far as retail boxes are concerned, and that is actually one of our issues with it. The micro USB cable is too short for desktop usage and the bundled ear phones are cheap and not even in-ear. Considering the fact that you are paying around 20K INR for this phone, one would expect at least higher quality earphones, let alone a lengthy data connectivity cable. Coming to the actual device itself, the Lumia 625 is positively bulky thanks to the 159g weight, but is slightly more manageable than the Lumia 920 due to the relatively slim 9.1mm profile. The display, which is a 4.7 inch WVGA LCD screen, is very similar to the one on the Lumia 520, and that's not a compliment. The back houses a similar ...
