This year has seen the rise of durable smartphones as a credible trend in the market - first we had the Xperia Z followed by the Huawei Ascend D2 and now Samsung has joined in with the new Galaxy S4 Active. The S4 Active is the durable cousin of the Galaxy S4, sharing an impressive specs list whilst also adding IP67 dustproofing and water resistance up to 1 metre for 30 minutes. Up front is the large 5 inch touchscreen which is bright and vibrant but uses TFT technology as opposed to Super AMOLED in the Galaxy S4. Compared to the Galaxy S4, the S4 Active is only slightly thicker (9.1 mm vs 7.9 mm) but is very pleasant to hold. The extra thickness adds a sturdier feel to Samsung's rugged flagship and a 1.9GHz quad-core processor with 2GB RAM ensure the Galaxy S4 is no slouch. 16GB internal storage makes it on board and a microSD card slot allows you to increase the storage by up to 64GB. The Galaxy S4 came with a 13 megapixel camera and this drops to an 8 megapixel sensor in the Galaxy S4 Active. However, despite the drop in sensor size, the S4 Active comes with ...

The Nokia Asha 501 forms the next generation of feature phones. Bright colorful designs, a touch centric interface and the legendary Nokia build quality are poised to offer a very compelling smartphone-like experience to a first time user. Here's a gallery of Nokia's latest while we work on the review. True to the all touch design philosophy, the Nokia Asha 501 can be navigated for the most part using gestures. The handset sports a single button below the screen. The button corresponds to going back. Those of you who are aware of and have experienced the Harmattan based Nokia N9 will feel right at home on the Asha 501. The interface elements are very similar and the iconography used is reminiscent of the N9. A single button can be found below the display and is used to go back a menu. The button provides good tactile feedback. The remaining buttons can be seen on the right side of the handset. The segmented volume rocker and power keys all provide sufficient feedback and have a very reassuring click to them. Continuing the Lumia inspired design language is the back of the phone. The camera module can be found inside an 'island' etched into the back with the Nokia ...

BlackBerry announced last year that the BlackBerry PlayBook would get the latest BlackBerry 10 update. The company's CEO Thorsten Heins even confirmed earlier this year at the BlackBerry 10 launch that they plan to upgrade all existing PlayBooks to BlackBerry 10. Now BlackBerry has announced that  it will not be upgrading the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet to BlackBerry 10. The CEO confirmed it in the company's investor call earlier today. BlackBerry reported a loss in its first quarter results for the 3 months ended June 1, 2013. Both the BlackBerry 10 and the PlayBook OS are based on the QNX operating system. Thorsten Heins added that the tablet would not get the BlackBerry 10 update due to performance and user experience concerns. The company did not discuss the long-term future of the PlayBook, but it said they would continue to support the tablet's existing operating system. During the Quarter the company shipped just 100,000 BlackBerry PlayBook tablets.

Blackberry pushed out its quarterly earnings report yesterday and the news is disappointing for the most part. Covering financial quarter 1 for 2014 ie from March to May 2013, the smartphone manufacturer has increased its revenues from $2.8 billion to $3.1 billion. The company has lost a total of $84 million which amounts to about 13 cents per share. Total device shipments were 6.8 million of which just  about 40% were BB10 based devices. This brings combined shipments for the Z10 and Q10 to a very disappointing 2.7 million units. Shipments for the company's Playbook tablet too was reported at under 100,000 units. Blackberry announced that the Playbook will not be updated to BB10 as had been promised. The company refused to give a breakdown between the shipment numbers of BB10 devices. The market has responded to Blackberry's financial results and stocks were down 28%. Overall the results are quite damning for the company and we'll be quite interested to see how they aim to counteract this. Blackberry has given an outlook for the next quarter and expects to report further losses.

We've reported on BlackBerry's upcoming large screen device. The phone has now shown up on video and appears to be absolutely massive. The device is pegged to have a 5 inch display but the fairly large bezel makes it appear even bigger.  httpv://youtu.be/gWoDJEUGwbg The handset appears to have a design language that is a cross between that of the BlackBerry Q10 and the Z10. The phone is also believed to have the weaved glass back from the Q10. While the screen might be 5 inches in size, resolution is said to be 720p which would place it behind other leading handsets. Seemingly controlled, yet another new Moto X leak has been let loose on the Internet. This time, it's not the Google Chariman, but the Canadian carrier Rogers. In a "Tech Talk Experts" video, Rogers shows off the black Moto X, which very much looks like the Nexus 4, but shows off rather intriguing functionality. The Moto X is always listening to your voice for commands, just like the Google glass and will let you talk to it, without touching the phone. Much like the Microsoft Kinect on the Xbox One, Google Now always keeps its ears open for a specific command, in this case - "Ok Google Now". A few more interesting features have been revealed, but watch the video first - httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uBGU9t7NpaA As you saw above, the Google Now service always listens to you to respond to your queries. Think of it as the Google glass functionality brought right into your smartphone. Also, don't fret, there will be an option to turn it off of course. Like all modern voice recognition services, the Moto X can understand your voice and activates voice commands only to your voice, which is much needed in these days of high tech fraud. "Active updates" are small ...

Samsung launched the Galaxy Mega 5.8 sometime back and we've been putting the phone through its paces. The phone is powered by a 1.4 Ghz Broadcom processor paired with a VideoCore IV GPU. Synthetic benchmarks can tell quite a bit about the performance of a device and we've embedded some of the more popular ones below. AnTuTu Benchmark The phone scores just 9406 in the AnTuTu benchmark which places it quite low even amongst the mid range handsets. In the GPU centric Basemark benchmark, the phone scored 8.476 FPS which is pretty good given the competition. The VideoCore IV GPU performs well enough. With a score of 12FPS in GFXBench, the Mega 5.8 lines up right alongside devices like the Gionee Dream D1. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 achieved 9.4 in the GFX Benchmark. Linpack is a CPU centric benchmark where the Galaxy Mega 5.8 managed to score 82.802. This places it in the lower half of the competiton. In the popular Quadrant benchmark, the Galaxy Mega 5.8 scores 4058 points. We'll have the full review soon.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 Review

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 is a part of Samsung's two pronged approach to capture the audience looking for a device even bigger than the 5.5inch Note 2 but smaller than a tablet. Targeting the 5.8 inch and 6.3 inch segments, Samsung now has handsets at practically every screen size. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 incorporates a large screen with dual SIM capabilities to offer an interesting proposition. Is it worth taking a look at ? Read on to find out. Design The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 is a play on the design of the Galaxy S4 which in itself isn't exactly a very fresh design. Samsung has a habit of marginally tweaking the design and that's what you get here with the slimmer bezel and slightly more angular design. The phone is just about 9.9 mm thick. The front of the phone is basically a massive screen that at 5.8 inches really is approaching tablet territories. Bezels are refreshingly thin and you get a speaker grille, 1.9MP front facing camera and proximity sensor above it. Below the display is a hardware home key that is flanked with a menu and back button on both sides. The right side of the phone has the power ...
