Samsung is working on a faster LTE chip of its own, which could be used in the Galaxy S6. According to the Korean media, Samsung will ship a Cat 10 LTE modem in its devices next year. The modem could be arriving in Samsung's Galaxy S6 smartphone, or at least in the international version, which will come with the company's Exynos SoC. This 3 band LTE Cat. 10 compatible chipset will reportedly be capable of providing speeds of up to 450 Mbps according to the report. This is higher than the maximum 300Mbps speed of the current LTE Cat. 6 standard. Qualcomm has already announced that it is working on Cat. 10 LTE modem called as the Gobi 9×35 but as per the official specifications, it is not being used in the Snapdragon 810 processor. South Korean mobile operator LG U+ is also developing a tri-band LTE network that could support theoretical speeds of 450Mbps. It is unclear if this new Cat.10 modem will be manufactured by other companies or by Samsung itself. via

A small English auctioneer based in Marchington, East Staffordship have been appointed by the administrators of failed UK retailer Phones4U to raise approximately £10.8 million by selling ex stock items. Around 2,000 to 3,000 items - which include headphones, watches, speakers and cases - have begun going on sale in weekly online auctions which will continue until all stock is sold. John Pye Auctions were appointed by administrators PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) to sell Phones4U's stock after the retailer went bust back in September. The company fell into administration with around £86 million worth of stock but it's unclear whether the mobile handsets in stock at the time will also be auctioned off. Manager of the Auction Hub, Steve Anderson, said: "There will be a sale every week until we get rid of the stock. It comes at an ideal time for people buying Christmas presents. "It's a shame that a big business is closed down and a lot of people have lost their jobs, although I know a lot of people from there who have now found work. From our point of view, it's a great coup to be handling the sell- off." Head auctioneer Trevor Palethorpe added: "While it is always very sad to see such a huge national ...

A week with the Huawei Honor 6

Shortly before it's launch, the new Honor 6 was involved in significant marketing activity but Huawei, having faced criticism over handling of customer data in Europe and the USA, chose to market the Honor 6 as its own brand. Confusion aside, on paper at least, the Honor 6 has a significant chance of dominating the mid-range as it features premium specs without a hefty price tag. After a week with the Honor 6, what did we make of the handset? As a week is not long enough for in-depth testing of a handset, we've adopted this Editorial format as opposed to a full review. The Honor 6 arguably aims to pick up where the lack of a budget Nexus handset this year left off. In previous years, the new Nexus device would have offered a very impressive challenge to any mid-range handset but the high-priced high-specced Nexus 6 has left a gap in the market that manufacturers will be keen to fill. With the Honor 6, the hardware has the makings of a real mid-range heavyweight as the 5 inch IPS Full HD panel has the same specification as the much-higher priced flagship Sony Xperia Z3. The display offers vibrant colours and deep blacks ...

BT looks set to push ahead with a deal to purchase O2 after opting for the network over bigger rival EE. According to a report published by This Is Money, the O2 deal will cost BT a little less than acquiring EE but despite the latter having 3 million more customers, a potential acquisition would have faced significant regulatory hurdles. It's long been expected that BT would re-enter the mobile market and this was confirmed after O2's parent company - Spain-based Telefonica SA - announced they were in talks with BT to sell their profitable UK network. At the same time, BT confirmed they were also in talks to acquire EE - who are the UK's largest network with approximately 35 percent market share - and last week we heard that BT were set to make a firm bid for either network by Christmas. The move to acquire EE would have made BT the largest broadband, TV and landline provider in the UK but would have meant significant regulatory challenges that would likely result in the company being split into multiple entities. As Telefonica acquired BT's former Cellnet mobile network in 2005 and rebranded it to O2, the decision by BT's board to ...
