With an aim to protect user conversations from unwanted surveillance and snooping, WhatsApp messenger has rolled out end-to-end encryption with TextSecure protocol from Open Whisper Systems. Currently the encryption only applies to messages sent between Android phones, with the latest version of the Android app automatically encrypting messages without the need for users to enable the feature. The feature does not apply to group messages or media messages. The encryption feature is offered by default, meaning WhatsApp users don't have to turn it on and shouldn't notice its presence. "WhatsApp deserves enormous praise for devoting considerable time and effort to this project. Even though we're still at the beginning of the rollout, we believe this already represents the largest deployment of end-to-end encrypted communication in history." said Open Whisper Systems in a release. ‘End-to-end’ encryption simply means is WhatsApp won’t be able to decrypt the messages itself even if the law prosecution compels Facebook. WhatsApp will set up the key exchange between users, but only among the users involved in the conversation will access to it. Apple's iMessage service also encrypts data from "end-to-end". via

Apple iPhone 6 Plus vs Huawei Ascend Mate 7 Benchmarks

$

When considering the performance of a handset, attention is inevitably turned towards benchmarking applications such as GeekBench 3, 3D Mark and AnTuTu (to name but a few). When comparing performance across iOS and Android, the benchmark applications that can be used are limited but both GeekBench 3 and 3D Mark reveal some interesting facts. Comparing the iPhone 6 Plus and Ascend Mate 7, the benchmarks reveal some surprising results. Apple are unique in that they control both the hardware and software elements of their handsets whilst Huawei (and other Android OEMs excluding Google) have to compensate for a lack of deep integration with the core OS by using much higher specs. The Ascend Mate 7 sports a quad-core Kirin processor with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage whilst the iPhone 6 Plus has a dual-core Apple A8 CPU, 1GB RAM and 64GB storage (there’s also 16GB and 128GB iPhone 6 Plus variants available). On paper, the iPhone 6 Plus isn't as powerful and therefore the Ascend Mate 7 should easily win this benchmark comparison but what do Geekbench 3 and 3D Mark show? Well that’s a surprise - the iPhone 6 Plus wins the Geekbench 3 single-core test by a large amount whilst the ...

Apple ordered to pay $23.6M fine over patent for pager technology

Apple has been ordered by a federal jury to pay $23.6 million for illegally using pager patents in its products. The company will have to pay the fine to a Texas based firm, Mobile Telecommunications Technologies. Apple has been using SkyTel pager technology on its iPhone and other devices without a permission. Mobile Telecommunications was considered a wireless messaging pioneer in the 1990s, when its SkyTel 2-Way paging system was the state of the art for mobile communication. Now, MTel is a licensing company controlled by United Wireless Holdings, which operates the SkyTel paging system for use by first responders and doctors. Apple denied the allegations of patent infringement and said MTEL was trying to take credit for everything from emoji to calendar invites. It argued the patents were invalid when they were issued in the 1990s. This is a second case where Apple was accused of pager patent technology but the company did win that case. via

Samsung has lost its bid to a US Judge about putting the Microsoft smartphone patent royalties suit on hold. The U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff said the lawsuit would proceed despite the arbitration. In August Microsoft sued Samsung accusing it of breaching a collaboration agreement by initially refusing to make royalty payments after the U.S. company announced its intention to acquire Nokia’s handset business in September 2013. The software giant claimed that Samsung still owed $6.9 million in interest on more than $1 billion patent in royalties. Earlier this month Samsung claimed that Microsoft has violated their deal after acquiring Nokia as it now makes the software company a direct hardware competitor. Samsung filed the request for arbitration with the Hong Kong office of the International Court of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce. via

Ofcom has begun repurposing some TV spectrum in the UK for use with mobile services in a bid to free up unused spectrum and increase the allowance available to UK consumers. The regulator today said it would make the 700MHz spectrum, currently used for digital terrestrial television, available for mobile broadband use by 2022. Ed Richards, chief executive at the regulator, said: "This is a crucial next step in the development of the UK's communications infrastructure. This decision ensures that we are making the raw materials available with which investors and companies can build the services which will support the digital economy of the future." "More spectrum will be available for mobile broadband where demand is especially high, but the UK will retain a competitive terrestrial television platform as well." The move won't be straightforward however; in order to repurpose the spectrum, both TV and the Programme Making and Special Events (PMSE) sector will have to make changes. These changes will also require the modification of infrastructure and equipment at a cost of between £420 and £470 million for TV infrastructure and between £13m and £21m for equipment. Ofcom says that the move is a necessity with mobile data usage set to soar by 45 ...

Online giant Amazon spells trouble for UK Royal Mail growth

Royal Mail on Wednesday warned  that online giant Amazon's own delivery service and increased competition from rival couriers has hampered progress and impacted revenues. The former state-owned British company said that Amazon's plans to launch their own delivery service would cut the growth in the British parcel market for it and its rivals from 4-5 percent down to 1-2 percent. Amazon is planning to deliver more of its own packages through its own delivery service and as the former state-owned courier's biggest customer (accounting for six percent of total sales), Amazon will impact on both Royal Mail and its rivals in the near future. Alongside shipping via Royal Mail, the online retailer also delivers via other couriers such as DPD, TNT and Yodel and its decision to bring its deliveries in-house is likely to have a major impact on the parcels market in the UK. Moya Green, chief executive at Royal Mail, told Reuters: When an online retailer of the size and scale of Amazon decides to build out its own delivery network, that changes the market for everybody.
