Former Phones 4U Directors face legal action over collapse

A leading American law firm has been asked to look into claims that Phones4u's directors and mobile network partners were responsible for the company's collapse into administration. Sky News has learnt that Quinn Emanual Urquhart and Sullivan has been appointed by the chain's administrators, PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), to look into the action of the directors before the demise. This could lead to legal action should the directors be judged to have breached their fiduciary duties as company directors. A week before the Apple iPhone 6 launched in the UK back in September, Phones4u collapsed into administration following the decision by Vodafone and EE to withdraw their services. Since then more information has surfaced including rumours that the owners had issued bonds on the Irish Market and used the money to repay the capital they used to buy the chain. The collapse of the UK's second largest independent retailer led to almost 5,000 jobs at risk and although Dixons Carphone, Vodafone and EE have acquired some of Phones4U's assets including 2000 staff, around 3,000 employees were made redundant. The founder of Phones4U, John Caudwell, accused the networks of 'ruthless' behaviour after both EE and Vodafone withdrew services (the latter also held talks about buying Phones4U back in ...

For fans awaiting the launch of the Google Nexus 6 in the UK, the wait is almost over as UK-based online retailer Mobiles.co.uk has announced the handset will launch in the UK on 1 December. As reported by Pocket-Lint, the Nexus 6 will be available to pre-order from 18 November and the retailer says that the handset "should be" from £28 per month. Unfortunately it doesn't reveal the SIM free price of the handset, rather focusing on the details of the plan which uses the O2 network and offers unlimited minutes, texts and 1GB data each month. The retailer doesn't mention a SIM free price for the Nexus 6 at launch and there's also no mention of a price on Google Play; at the moment it's unclear whether the handset will follow previous Nexus pricing (much cheaper than its rivals) but with the pricing in other countries in mind, the Nexus 6 is likely to cost between £400 and £500 SIM free at launch. The Motorola-made Nexus 6 is the first smartphone to run Google's new Android 5.0 Lollipop platform and joins its tablet sibling, the HTC-made Nexus 9, in the Lollipop stable. Nexus 6 specs include a 5.96 inch Quad HD (2k) screen, ...

EE says UK national roaming is a ‘flawed concept’

Earlier this week we heard that the UK government was considering introducing legislation to allow customers to roam across any mobile network when they had no coverage.  The move was expected to be unpopular with the networks and an EE spokesperson has told Mobile the network believes 'national roaming' is a 'flawed concept' which would 'deteriorate network reliability for tens of millions across the UK'.  It is anticipated that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport will announce the plans for legislation later this week. The networks are believed to have been in discussions over curbing the issue of mobile black spots and the DCMS is said to be disappointed with the lack of resolution as a result of the talks. The proposed legislation is expected to force the networks to allow customers to switch networks when they enter an area with no reception. An EE spokesperson told Mobile: We fully support Government on the joint ambition to improve rural coverage. We’re keenly aware that there are some parts of the UK where customers still can’t get adequate signal levels and, while we’re already working on some significant nationwide coverage improvement plans, we also need Government to work more closely with the industry to remove the barriers ...

LG and Google have signed a 10 year global patent cross-licensing agreement covering a broad range of products and technologies. The deal also includes existing patents and the ones that will be filed over the period of next ten years. “We’re pleased to enter into this agreement with a leading global technology company like LG. By working together on cross-licenses like this, companies can focus on bringing great products and services to consumers around the world.” said Allen Lo, deputy general counsel for patents at Google. The move comes as other companies like Microsoft have been actively courting for royalties with pre-existing patents. Google, after acquiring Motorola's patents, has been making similar agreements with all its Android partners, hoping to fend off patent trolls and providing protection against litigation. It is notable LG, which is the fourth largest smartphone maker, also produces Android Wear-equipped smartwatches. “LG values its relationship with Google, and this agreement underscores both companies’ commitment to developing new products and technologies that enhance consumers’ lives,” said J.H. Lee, executive vice president and head of the LG Electronics Intellectual Property Center. Earlier in January this year, Google and Samsung signed a 10 year global patent cross-license agreement.

The company brought back the SD card functionality with Android 4.4 KitKat but it did not offer it on enough range of apps. Developers will once again be able to fully access SD card directories and files. Whenever you install an app from Play Store, you have to accept certain permission. Developers can now add permission and ask for what folders on SD card the app is allowed to access. They can also ask for access to entire SD card or a particular folder.
