LG Display has introduced a 5.3-inch Full HD LCD panel for smartphones with just 0.7mm bezel on the sides. The company introduced world’s slimmest 5.2-inch 1080p smartphone display last year, which was just 2.2mm thin with a 2.3mm bezel. The new smartphone display becomes the world's narrow bezel display panel,  narrower than the 0.8mm thickness of a credit card. Sharp introduced the Aquos Crystal and Aquos Crystal X smartphones recently, which had minimal bezel. The display uses Neo Edge module processing technology and the world’s first Advanced In-Cell Touch (AIT) technology that uses an adhesive instead of double-sided tape to attach and completely seal the total area and edges of the panel’s circuit board and backlight unit, says LG. This makes LG achieve minimal bezel width, while blocking light leakage and being waterproof and dust proof. It also improves panel’s durability despite the narrow bezel because of increased elasticity as the adhesive hardens. It saves costs too since a separate process for touch functions is not required. The new display will be mass-produced in November and supplied first to China, since there is a demand for large screen smartphones is strong in the country.

Samsung has reported its earnings for Q2 2014, in which the company has managed to make operating profit of 4.06 trillion won ($3.9 billion) for the quarter ended September 30, 2014, down from 10.16 trillion won compared to the same quarter last year. It has reported net profit of 4.22 trillion won ($4 billion) on revenues of 47.45trillion won ($45 billion), down 9% compared to the same quarter last year. In the mobile sector, it has reported revenues of 23.52 trillion won, down 15% compared to 27.51 trillion won in the previous quarter. The mobile division has seen earnings fall in two consecutive quarters, despite marginal increase in third quarter smartphone sales. The main reason of fall in profits is due to fall in smartphone average selling price (ASP) due to price cut for older models and declined shipments of high-end smartphones, said Samsung. Looks like Samsung is facing the heat from budget smartphone makers. Tablet shipments increased due to the expansion of new Tab S and sales of Galaxy Tab 4 series, but it didn't reveal the exact number of tablets shipped. Samsung expects demand for smartphone and tablet to increase in the fourth quarter, but the competition among maker will intensify. It plans to introduce smartphones with flexible displays, metal frames and focus on streamlined strategic models in ...

WhatsApp Voice calling feature has been delayed till next year, according to WhatsApp CEO, Jan Koum. Speaking at the Re/Code's Code/Mobile conference, Koum said that the launch of the feature has been delayed till Q1 of 2015. Koum said that the company has technical difficulties to overcome before adding the voice calling feature to the app. He added that WhatsApp is working through several technical issues related to the launch, including the fact that the app does not have access to certain phone microphones, which makes noise cancellation more difficult. WhatsApp is trying to work through how the service would operate in situations where data coverage is poor, noting that many users in emerging markets are still using 2G EDGE coverage, noted Koum. He also stated that if these issues are not solved, the voice calling feature launch will be moved further through the year. Giving further insights on the evergrowing users base, Koum said that WhatsApp which has over 600 million monthly active users aspires to cross 1 billion monthly active users within the next several years. Koum said that WhatsApp has no plans of charging users in future and is instead focused on growth with Facebook's financial support. WhatsApp had announced that it ...

EE today switched on the next generation of 4G in London, offering download speeds of up to 150Mbps to any user who has a compatible device (currently the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Alpha and the Huawei Ascend Mate 7 too supports the next-gen network). The new network speeds are facilitated by 'carrier aggregation' which combines 20Mbps of the 1800MHz spectrum with 20MHz of the 2.6GHz spectrum to offer the advanced network. EE originally launched trials of LTE-A (also known as LTE Cat 6) in East London's TechHub earlier this year but today marks the beginning of the rollout for general consumers. LTE Cat.6 technology theoretically supports download speeds of up to 300Mbps but in real world usage, these peak at 150Mbps. For users who do not have a LTE-A enabled handset (such as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus), you'll still be able to benefit but won't receive the headline download speeds; the addition of more spectrum means there is more bandwidth available and you'll have a more reliable and faster connection than you do at the moment. LTE-A is currently being switched on in Central London with the 2.5GHz spectrum live on 150 sites and 1800MHz live on more than 1500 sites. ...
