Microsoft is demanding Samsung to pay $6.9 million in unpaid interest from last year. This is the interest of the $1 billion annual payment Samsung has delayed to pay last year. The suit was initially filed in August by Microsoft on the grounds that Samsung has stopped making royalty payments on time and is refusing to pay interest for the delay. However, the amount that is being claimed in damages was not mentioned at that time. The company claimed that Samsung is using Microsoft’s April acquisition of Nokia’s phone business as an excuse to not pay the royalties along with the interest on late payment outstanding since September 2013. "Samsung has suggested that Microsoft has breached the business collaboration agreement. We disagree, and that’s why we asked the court to rule that Microsoft is not in breach. Second, Microsoft has asked for $6.9 million in damages due to unpaid interest from last year." wrote David Howard, Microsoft Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel in a company blog post. A Korean Times report had previously claimed that Samsung and Microsoft had agreed to discuss a settlement over the issue. via:Re/Code

GT Advanced Technologies, a company that specializes in supplying engineered sapphire glass has just filed for bankruptcy. The company had entered into a contract with Apple last year to supply sapphire crystal glass for upcoming products. While it was speculated that Apple would be using sapphire glass on the iPhone 6, it instead opted to use its own version of reinforced glass instead. GT Advanced is believed to have faced yield issues with supplies. The company's Chapter 11 filing however does not mean the end of GT Advanced. The company expects to  function as normal as it restructures itself. The Chapter 11 filing made by the company has been designed to protect its assets as it assesses ways to refinance its obligations and it will protect the company's operating budget from debt. GT Advanced's current agreement with Apple will continue to be in effect and it is believed to be the supplier for Cupertino's upcoming Apple Watch. We'll have more on the future of the company as and when we find out.

Facebook has completed its WhatsApp acquisition for a whopping $22 billion which was originally announced at $19 billion in February. The acquisition cost has increased by $3 billion because of the increased value of Facebook's stock in recent months. The social network received approval from the European Commission on Saturday to move forward with the acquisition, which had been opposed by some European telecommunications companies. WhatsApp CEO Jan Koum has now joined the Facebook board of directors, as a result of the acquisition. The original deal would have seen approximately $4 billion in cash and $12 billion in Facebook shares being used to buy the app, with an extra $3 billion in restricted stock units for the founders and employees, vesting after four years. According to the SEC filing, the final price turned out to be $4.59 billion in cash and 177.7 million shares of Class A common Facebook stock, along with 45.9 million in restricted stock units provided to WhatsApp employees, giving the purchase a total value of just under $22 billion. WhatsApp has been growing rapidly, especially in developing countries like Brazil, India, Mexico and Russia, and now has more than 600 million users. Source|via
