We had a chance to sit down with Hugo Barra, Vice President of Xiaomi Global and clarify some of the burning questions surrounding the brand in the Indian market. It’s still early days for Xiaomi in the Indian market, but they have already managed to make a name for themselves with their first product. Thanks to their flash sale model, the Mi 3 made headlines each time it went on sale. While, a small bunch of people who got their hands on the unit were happy, there are far too many disappointed consumers. To make it even worse, the company had to go through a phase of criticism and allegations. I first ran into Hugo Barra during the official announcement of the Xiaomi Mi 3 in India. Hugo is a very down to earth professional with a broad knowledge across various industry subjects. The executive addressed all our questions with an easy going smile and we believe Xiaomi has a great future in India under his guidance. On with the interview.. FoneArena: Hugo, first of all, we would request you to present yourselves for our readers. And, do spread some light about the position you hold at Xiaomi. Hugo: I am incharge of our ...

Xiaomi, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, took the Indian market by storm when it introduced the Mi3 here at an astonishingly low price point. The highly specced handset has become a much sought after device and was being sold exclusively through Flipkart via a unique flash sale model. However, it looks like the run might be over and Xiaomi might have discontinued the Mi3 for the Indian market.  Manu Jain, Head at Xiaomi India had this to say, "Over next few weeks, we will focus on Redmi 1S, and Mi 3 wont be available. We will take the final call after few weeks, once we have more visibility / data points."  Xiaomi intends to focus on the newly launched Redmi 1S which is also a very good offering at a compelling price point of Rs. 5,999. Combining a Snapdragon 400 processor and quality construction, the phone competes with the likes of the Moto G. While most certainly a great handset in its own right, it doesn't quite replace the Mi3. What prompted the company to suspend sales remains a mystery given how popular it has proven to be. Perhaps the supply constraints and expansion into additional markets might be at play. All said and ...

Coolpad puts together Xiaomi Redmi Note alternative, but with LTE

As Hugo Barra extensively tours India preaching about the Xiaomi philosophy, it's usually questions around the Redmi 1S and the Redmi Note that he has to tackle. The Redmi Note offers some impressive value for money. That's prompted the device to already be very popular in markets it isn't even available in yet, making other brands green in envy. China's Coolpad (that actually has a partnership with India's Spice) just rolled out a device -- the Coolpad Great God F2 -- that rivals the Redmi Note on the specs set, besides just being green in envy! Specifications 5.5-inch 1280 x 720p display 1.7GHz octa-core CPU 2GB RAM 16GB ROM LTE module - MediaTek MT6290 13 mega-pixel f/2.0 camera The Great God F2 comes with a price tag of 999 CNY or about $160 that makes it an affordable LTE device. The device also bundles a 'smart antenna', that Coolpad claims increases reception by 30%. A WCDMA China Unicom version will go on sale September 1st, with a China Mobile variant set to follow suit in the coming months. Source

Xiaomi announce Redmi 1S for Indonesia

It hasn't been long since Xiaomi announced the affordable Redmi 1S for India, but the fast rising Chinese company has announced the device for another market -- Indonesia. Xiaomi took the aggressive route when it came to pricing in India, and announced it for only 5,999 INR or roughly $99. However, Indonesians will have to pay IDR 1.5 million or roughly $128 to be able to take home the Redmi 1S. Although it isn't India-cheap, the $128 equivalent price tag is a good $8 cheaper than the Redmi 1S's price for Singapore. Specifications 4.7-inch 1280 x 720p display 1.6GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 SoC 1GB RAM 8GB expandable storage 8 mega-pixel rear camera 1.6 mega-pixel front camera 2000mAh battery MIUI V5 based onAndroid v4.3 Dual SIM The device will go on sale via online retailer Lazada. The first flash sale is pegged to start at 11am on September 4, but will only last an hour. Xiaomi has been able to win a lot of fans in India with its highly competitive pricing. In fact, I feel that Xiaomi is actually selling its devices at a loss in India in order to build a strong goodwill for its name. Considering it isn't selling too many devices, that's really a possibility. Do you think the Xiaomi phenomenon could ...

Apple is expected to announce a wearable device next month according to a latest report from Re/Code. The company has already scheduled the iPhone 6 launch on September 9th. The report only mentions a wearable device and does not specify if it will be a smartwatch or the iWatch which has been in the rumors for several months. Apple is expected to unveil a 4.7-inch iPhone and possibly a 5.5-inch model next month.  However, the report does state that Apple’s wearable will incorporate HealthKit, the upcoming software found in iOS 8 that adds fitness and health tracking features to its mobile platform. Also, the wearable will boast of HomeKit features to help it work together with connected home devices. Apple has been tight lipped about the iPhone launch until now and has not sent out press invites for the it as of now. Re/Code had previously reported that the iWatch might come in October but considering the report its looks like Apple is planning to announced its sooner.
