Google bids adieu to Orkut, will shut it down on Sept 30

Google is finally pulling the plug on Orkut, its first effort in social network. The ten year old social network will shut down its operations on September 30 and existing users will be able to export their information using Google Takeout until September 2016. However, new users will not be able to create accounts. "Over the past decade, YouTube, Blogger and Google+ have taken off, with communities springing up in every corner of the world. Because the growth of these communities has outpaced Orkut's growth, we've decided to bid Orkut farewell (or tchau). We'll be focusing our energy and resources on making these other social platforms as amazing as possible for everyone who uses them" Google Engineering Director Paulo Golgher wrote in a post on the Orkut blog. Google Play Edition of Moto G gets Android KitKat 4.4.4 update

Android KitKat 4.4.4 update is hitting Moto G Google Play Edition users. The over the air update does not bring any UI or other feature changes. It only adds security and stability improvements along with bug fixes which might improve your Android experience. The Google Play Edition of Moto G is making a jump from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 and skipping the 4.4.3 update, similar to the LG G Pad Google Play Edition that also received the same update. Motorola started rolling out 4.4.3 update to Moto X, G and E in early June soon after Nexus devices were updated with the latest Android version. Google Play Edition devices are next in line after Google’s Nexus devices for new software updates. Motorola recently confirmed that Android KitKat 4.4.4 update is coming to Droid Ultra, Maxx and Mini. The update should automatically pop up on all units since its being rolled out OTA. Microsoft smartband with cross platform support, 11 sensors coming in October: Report

Last month reports surfaced online stating that Microsoft is planning to launch a fitness focused smartwatch. The patent images of a possible smartwatch also gave us an idea of the look of the device. Now, a latest tit bit on the smartwatch is coming from Tom's Hardware saying that Microsoft Smartband will be launched in October. The report citing some sources stated that the smartband will come equipped with 11 sensors open APIs and cross-platform compatibility. This means that the device can be used on multiple platforms like iOS, Android and Windows Phone. Giving insights about the look of the device, the report touts that the Microsoft Smartband will not have a traditional display screen on the top, instead it will be on the inside of the wrist. Also the design of the device will be slim and flat resembling to that of a Nike fuel band. Lenovo has unveiled A805e, the company's latest smartphone in the A series at the Tianyi Mobile Phone Trade Exhibition held in China. It has a 5.5-inch qHD screen, powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 410 (MSM8916) processor based on ARM's Cortex A53 cores with Adreno 306 GPU and runs on Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean). The A805e would be the first Lenovo smartphone with Snapdragon 410 SoC. Lenovo also showcased the S860e with a 5.5-inch HD display, 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor and Android 4.4 (KitKat). Zomato acquires New Zealands’ restaurant discovery service Menumania

Zomato has acquired New Zealand-based restaurant discovery and reviews site MenuMania, for an undisclosed amount. This is the first acquisition of the popular online restaurant guide service. “Together, Zomato and MenuMania will be the largest resource of restaurant information in New Zealand, and I am sure both our users will love the integrated product once it rolls out over the next few weeks,” said Goyal, founder and CEO of Zomato, in a statement released by the company. Twitter buys mobile ad-tech startup TapCommerce

Twitter is continuing its shopping spree with another acquisition. The micro blogging firm has acquired ad tech firm TapCommerce to expand its mobile marketing platform. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed by either of the company, however Re/code reports that the deal is worth $100 million. Founded in 2012, TapCommerce targets people on their mobile phones or tablets with ads for things they've already expressed interest in buying, urging them to complete the purchase. Brian Long, CEO and co-founder of Tap Commerce, says that the company's platform processes over 15 billion targeted ad impression bids each day across 50,000 apps worldwide. We've agreed to acquire TapCommerce, a leader in mobile retargeting and re-engagement advertising. Asus Padfone 2 gets Android 4.4 KitKat with ZenUI

Asus has released the Android 4.4 (KitKat) update for the Padfone 2, the company's second Padfone device that was launched back in 2012, as it promised earlier this year. The KitKat update also brings new Asus ZenUI 1.1 with a new user interface. The ZenUi brings clean layout, flat icons, new color themes, animations, new ringtone and notification tones. ZenUI also has two features, What’s Next and Do It Later. The Asus Padfone 2 got the Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) update back in December 2012. Asus is yet to roll out the KitKat update for the Padfone Infinity / Asus Padfone A80 that was also promised earlier this year. The firmware update version 11.8.3.3 update for the Padfone 2 is 924.72 MB. It is not available over the air, but only through the Asus support site. You need to download the corresponding country variant or SKUs and download the ZIP image. Asus insists the users to back up the smartphone using Asus PC Tool since the update erases all the personal data from the phone. Disney has tied up with Japan’s LINE Corporation to launch the popular Disney Tsum Tsum puzzle game globally. This was published by LINE in Japan last year and holds the number 1 free app spot on both iOS and Android in Japan. Disney has also launched  stackable Tsum Tsum toys in select stores in North America and at Disney Parks. Last year Gameloft teamed up with LINE to launch LINE Let’s Golf game. Google acquires music streaming service Songza

With an aim to expand its music offering, Google has acquired music streaming service Songza. The official news comes weeks after there were reports that Google is going to buy Songza. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The three year old app offers user with curated playlists based on time of the day and moods. It is free app available on various platforms including Android, iOS, and the Web. Google Play already has some human-curated playlists, but largely relies on algorithms for much of its radio-style programming. With this acquisition, Google will ramp up its Google Play Music offerings and attract users to its platform. "We aren't planning any immediate changes to Songza, so it will continue to work like usual for existing users. Over the coming months, we’ll explore ways to bring what you love about Songza to Google Play Music. We'll also look for opportunities to bring their great work to the music experience on YouTube and other Google products" said Google in a company blog post. Xiaomi sells 26.1 million smartphones in first half of 2014

Xiaomi today announced that it has sold 26.11 million smartphones in the first half of 2014. This is a 271% increase compared to its sales last year. In the year 2012 the company shipped 7.19 million units, and in 2013 it shipped 18.7 million units, so it has already exceeded the combined sales of both 2012 and 2013 within the first half of 2014. It still aims to sell 60 million smartphones in 2014 as it announced earlier this year. Xiaomi founder Lei Jun said this goal does not seem difficult after looking at the first-half results. Coming to the revenues, Xiaomi has posted revenue of RMB 33 billion (US$5.32 billion) for the first half of 2014, up 149% compared to 2013. It already expanded to Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and the Philippines and plans to expand to India, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Turkey, Brazil and Mexico by 2014. The Xiaomi India website went live last month and the company is expected to launch their first smartphones in the country in coming weeks.

Google adds Android L support and new features to Docs and Sheet

Google has been updating Drive with various features since last week. First it allowed the ability to edit Microsoft Office files and offline supports for Docs, Sheets and Slides. Also, the Drive app for Android got an update with revamped UI and more. Today, Google has made Docs and Sheet app compatible with recently announced Android L. The move comes from Google just two days after discontinuing QuickOffice from Play Store. Docs and Sheet gets a complete overhauled UI that brings it in line of the developer preview. There are now few icons in the action bar and both the apps gets a floating “new document” button that allows you to create a new file from anywhere within the app. Microsoft Office compatibility has also been added to both the apps this means Docs can now create and edit Word docs while Sheets can create and edit Excel. Vine adds Loop Counts to highlight popular videos

Vine has introduced a new feature that will let a user know how many times their 6 second video has been views. Dubbed as Loop Counts, the feature will work as a metric to track the popularity of your video. This sounds similar to Like button on YouTube. Starting today, you’ll see loop counts on Vines in our iOS and Android mobile apps and on the web.
