Nest acquires home surveilance company Dropcam for $555 million

Google's gradual move into the connected home space seems to be picking up steam. Nest, a Google company that specializes in internet connected smoke detectors and smart thermostats, just announced that it is acquiring Dropcam in a deal estimated to be worth $555 million in cash. Despite being owned by Google, Nest is completing the acquisition on its own and Dropcam will be folded into their strategy. The company will also adhere to Nest's privacy policies which is very important from a consumer perspective. Dropcam manufactures internet connected security cameras and also offers a cloud based security video archive. Nest & Dropcam both follow a paid-for business model which ensures that they can afford to keep consumer data separate and secure. Nest's privacy policies further ensure that this data will not be shared with anyone including Google. It is safe to expect consumer backlash if that were the case since Google's business revolves around advertisements. Having access to security footage from your home would have serious ramifications. For the moment the two business will operate independently but expect Dropcam to be folded into the Nest way of doing things once the acquisition completes. [Source - Nest]

HTC hasn't been entirely secretive about their plans to launch a new tablet later this year and the latest rumors seem to corroborate those whispers. It is believed that the company might have been tasked with the production of Google's next Nexus tablet. HTC had been responsible for making the first Nexus handset ie the G1. Initially known as the Nexus 8 and believed to be codenamed the Flounder, latest news indicated that the handset will be called the HTC Volantis. The tablet will pack a 8.9" display with a resolution of 2048x1440 pixels. This resolution suggests that the tablet will approach a 4:3 aspect ratio. This would be the same as seen on Apple's iPad series of tablets and has proven to be more conducive for reading. Motorola is giving Android KitKat 4.4.4 update to Droid Ultra, Maxx and Mini. The company is skipping 4.4.3 update entirely on all these devices. All of these device users were eagerly waiting for the update which has been cancelled by Motorola in order to work on the latest update which will take some more time. Sorry for the delay in giving an update on the 4.4.3 upgrades but I had to wait unit Google announced KitKat 4.4.4 today (I am bound by a NDA). A significant security vulnerability was discovered by OpenSSL (https://www.openssl.org/news/secadv_20140605.txt) and is fixed in KitKat 4.4.4. We had to wait until KitKat 4.4.4 became available. Consequently, all of our 4.4.3 upgrades that were in carrier labs worldwide (including the 2013 Droid's) had to be respun, tested and resubmitted again. This was a significant unplanned effort that we had to undertake. We should be re-entering labs next week and hopefully getting TA (technical approval) in 3 to 5 weeks later depending on the carrier. David Schuster of Motorola announced on Google+ . The Android 4.4.4 update came shortly after Google rolled out the Android 4.4.4 update on a number of Nexus devices. Also, Motorola's latest handsets like the Moto G, X and ...

In a world of touchscreen phones, choices in form factors are few, but Spice, one of the many Indian smartphone manufacturers, is offering one, with a keyboard. Spice's Stellar 360, a budget Android touchscreen smartphone with a full sized qwerty keyboard, wants to appeal to a crowd that still likes its messages typed, on a real keyboard. Selling at a very low price of Rs. 4,799, can the phone be the bridging gap between lower end keypad based phones and a full touch screen device? Lets find out in our review. Check out our Unboxing here Design, Build and Hardware Walkthrough The design of the Spice Stellar 360 is relatable to previous attempts at marrying a touchscreen device with a dull sized keyboard. However, the 3.5 inch screen on the phone makes it a bit different, because the ratio of the screen is not 4:3, like other "touch and type" phones. And in terms of build quality, it is completely plastic, of the less stronger variety, which is not surprising considering the price, and no complaints really, this is a known compromise. The front face of phone has the touchscreen on top of the qwerty keypad, and between them lie the three capacitive Android ...

I was at the Microsoft Store in downtown San Francisco yesterday and store employees were readying a new sign at the entrance of the store. It read "Trade in your MacBook Air and get up to $650 toward a Surface Pro 3". Microsoft has been heavily comparing its latest Surface Pro 3 Tablet with the Apple Macbook Air and looks like Microsoft wants to send out a bold message. Microsoft has posted the terms for the offer and is valid only at the company owned retail stores. The offer is valid from 6/20/2014 until 7/31/2014 and is applicable only in Microsoft retail stores in the US and Canada and not online. Macbook Airs must be in working condition and should not be water damaged and not have damaged screens. The maximum value of $650 is applicable for the latest generation of Macbook Airs and would be decided by the store reps at the time of the purchase of the Surface Pro 3. The Surface Pro 3 is a great device from my experience so far with it. My only complaint is that when you are comparing your device with a Macbook Air which has a keyboard built-in , Microsoft should have ...
