File management is one of the most underrated features of a mobile operating system. For any platform to be truly independent, a file manager that allows local storage and management of any kind of file, is a necessity and with Windows Phone 8.1, this is finally happening. After moving to WinRT APIs for its latest mobile release, Microsoft has finally added the ability to download or upload files on the phone's browser or through various apps, using the file picker. The file picker naturally necessitates a file manager, which will be released as a standalone app by Microsoft, as revealed and teased on a Reddit AMA, by the company's Windows Phone champion, Joe Belfiore. The app is almost ready and is reportedly set to release this month. While this feature reveal is by no means a groundbreaking addition to the OS (we already have a lot of decent file managers on the Windows store taking advantage of the said APIs), but what is important, is the acknowledgement, from Microsoft of a feature that users have long wanted on its mobile platform. Even Google's pure version of Android comes without a file manager app, so this is something encouraging to see, especially ...

Sony had announced the XPERIA Z2 back in February at MWC 2014 in Barcelona, Spain along with Samsung's Galaxy S5. However due to certain production issues, the phone's availability has been very scarce. It's available in Singapore currently and it's availability has been announced around Europe as well. Other countries worldwide are yet to receive the device so we thought we'll bring you this unboxing. Certain places have reported a special package of the device that comes with a dock and noise cancelling earphones as well. Perhaps this would be a premium bundle and might cost you extra. In the UK for example, customers who had pre-ordered the device are getting freebies and other goodies since the launch was delayed by a bit. But our package didn't have either of them. Sony did however provide a 3 month extension to your warranty which you have to register online within 14 days of making ...

Apple scoops up low-power display company LuxVue

Apple has acquired LED maker LuxVue for an undisclosed sum, according to a TechCrunch report. The startup specializes in power-efficient displays that could be used in small consumer devices lacking space for bulky screens or batteries. “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans,” Apple said. The report suggests that Apple could be looking at both micro-LED's minimal power requirements and its improved brightness as benefits to its mobile range. In last month's earnings call Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the company had bought 24 companies in the last 18 months. Founded in 2009, not much is known about LuxVue except that it had raised $43 million in funding from Kleiner Perkins and others. The startup has filed a number of patents that could help devices maintain long battery life while keeping screen brightness high. It can be predicted that Apple might have acquired the start-up to use this technology in its much awaited foray in wearable tech with its rumoured iWatch. Apple is holding its annual developer conference next month, when it is anticipated to unveil new range of softwares and products. Last month there were reports that Apple is planning to buy Japanese chipmaker Renesas SP Drivers. Via: TechCrunch

The world's most popular Windows Phone turned into a life saver for a police man in Sao Paulo, Brazil where a couple of robbers opened fire at him in his house. The Lumia 520, which was sitting in his back pocket took a bullet, and in the end saved his life, and literally his behind too. Nokia, being known for its build quality, will certainly take this as a positive result, but we are sure any phone would have done the same. This happened in broad daylight, when the military police officer, aged 24 was just returning to his home with his uniform in hands, as he was off duty and wanted to wash it at this home. As he entered the house where his family members were held hostage, the two criminals opened fire, seeing his uniform. They reportedly fired two shots, once the officer began to flee, and one of them hit his buttocks, with the Lumia 520 taking that hit and the other shot reportedly hit the neighbour's gate. While the criminals fled the scene, the officer returned to find that the pair took off a lot of valuables. The story is not entirely rosy when you consider that ...

Last week, Snapchat made its foray into instant messaging by adding instant message and video calling feature to its Android and iOS apps. Today, a new report from The Verge suggests that the latest update was powered by company's secret acquisition of AddLive. AddLive integrates live video, voice and text chat into various applications and hence, this acquisition can help the company to pump up its video chat feature even further. Financial details of the deal however were not disclosed by either of the company. The popular self destructing photo messenger moved beyond selfies and allowed users to make video calls and send text messages within the app. In order to send a video, a user simply has to press and hold and the video is shared with your desired contact.
