In terms of Smartphone OEM market shares, Leaping over HTC and LG was Motorola that managed to gain 6.7% of the smartphone market share. While the earnings were up 7% year on year, it fellow below analyst estimates owing to slowdown in smartphone sales. The company was estimated to rake in  $138 million but reported processor royalties of $130.4m in the fourth quarter of 2013.  "In Q4 2013 ARM's processor royalty revenue grew faster than the overall semiconductor industry, however the degree of outperformance was impacted by slower sales of chips for high‐end smartphones," said ARM. ARM noted that the mix of chips sold had gravitated towards high volume, low ASP products like ARM based microcontrollers and smartcards which have an average selling price of under a dollar. Slow down in growth rates of smartphones have affected ARM as well like all major smartphone manufacturers. Sales of ARM based chips have grown 35 percent and the company's partners sold 2.9 billion ARM based chips in Q4 2013. This included 520 million Cortex A class processors and 140 million Mali GPUs. The company signed 26 processor licenses with 22 licensees including three licenses for their ARMv8- A 64 bit technology, two Cortex A50 series processors.

Things haven't really gone HTC's way since the rise of droids and HTC is trying to pull back things with their premium offerings. Last year, HTC announced their current flagship - HTC One to the delight of many Android lovers. HTC One defined styled in the Android smartphone market and came with an exceptional build quality and aluminum unibody. But the problem with the HTC One was their new UltraPixel technology which din't harness the results they would have expected. HTC went on to use the same HTC One design and build for the HTC One Mini and HTC One Max. Suddenly we had three similarly built devices lurking in various price ranges. Come 2014 and we have new expectations from phone manufacturers to bring their best in their flagships and we hope HTC will do better with the HTC One successor. HTC M8, the rumored successor, leaked sometime ago and sported the same old design. Now, another leaked photo shows even more clearly  how closely the HTC M8 resembles the HTC One(HTC M7). However, there are a few changes. The new HTC M8 will supposedly sport two camera sensors with dual LED flash on its back for better imaging. Two cameras ...

Google Maps app for iPhone, iPad and Android already shows you alternate routes when you request for it while navigating. Google has updated these apps to show notifications if there’s a faster route. Google maps already shows bands of red, yellow and green along your route based on traffic conditions. The new notification option now lets you reach the destination faster with dynamic rerouting so that you can avoid heavy traffic in your chosen route. Google acquired Waze, popular crowd-sourced navigation app back in June and introduced real-time incident reports from Waze users for Google Maps for Android, iPhone and iPad in select countries. Getting traffic info would help dynamic rerouting since these updates are instant. Both these apps have also been updated with bug fixes.

Stephen Elop, the ex-CEO from Nokia, will be heading the expanded devices team at Microsoft, as per reports. Previously rumoured to be in the running for the top job at Microsoft, Stephen Elop now gets to lead the newly formed team, like previously agreed upon. This is pretty obvious now, as Microsoft just announced its newest CEO, Satya Nadella, who takes over the position from Steve Ballmer. Elop stepped down from his role as the CEO of Nokia immediately after the announcement of Nokia-Microsoft acquisition, to avoid a conflict of interests. The Microsoft CEO search went on for over six months and Stephen Elop was a prime candidate, if previous reports are to be believed. A lot of rumours circled around how Elop would want to spin off Xbox and Bing divisions if he becomes CEO and so forth, which had lent less credibility, but the fact that he was in the running was more pronounced. But finally, we have an insider CEO, and hence the previously agreed upon role of the Expanded devices head would go to Elop, who, along with Jo Harlow, Juha Putkiranta, Timo Toikkanen, and Chris Weber would transfer to Microsoft after the deal officially closes.
